They’re quick-growing deciduous shrubs with attractive flowers that are incredibly easy to grow: which is exactly what makes Spiraea japonica (also known as bridal wreath) such a popular and excellent shrub for borders. Spiraea tends to flower profusely with their pollinator-friendly blooms, adding a delight of colour to any landscape.
Herman Geers in the Netherlands is best known for selecting the most innovative Spiraea varieties based on compactness, eye-catching foliage colour, strength, flower power and intense, long-lasting flower colours. As if that’s not enough, his varieties are highly resistant to powdery mildew as well.
Spiraea japonica ‘Tessa’ has been selected for all the above and more. The bright golden-yellow foliage of this stunning Spiraea retains its bright colour all season long - in contrast to many other golden-leaved Spiraea. And not only her foliage colour remains bright: the same can be said for the intense pink colour of the beautiful button-shaped flowers that sparkle from May all the way to August. Which doesn’t just please us, but pollinators as well. To add some more colour to the mix, Spiraea ‘Tessa’ surprises with orange-red young shoots.
How to care for Spiraea japonica ‘Tessa’:
‘Tessa’ has a naturally compact, mounded and neat shape, meaning she hardly requires any looking-after. She’s the perfect Spiraea for both gardens and containers: very hardy and very easy to grow. Like all Herman’s Spiraea, ‘Tessa’ has a high resistance against powdery mildew.
‘Tessa’ will grow up to 25-30 cm high and 30 cm wide. Plant in full sun or semi-shade, although ‘Tessa’ prefers the sun. Can be pruned after flowering, isn’t picky about the type of soil and hardy to -30 ºC.
