Sheridan Nurseries in Canada erected a column of honor for Constant Degroot, undoubtedly a descendant of Dutch emigrants.
This cultivation manager, who died young, found a columnar Thuja that stands out because of its narrow habit and shell-shaped foliage.
The newly found conifer got its name, no doubt because of its merits to Sheridan.
In this way Degroot became a celebrity and his name lives on in this tree of life.
